The Master Numbers

 Numerology's difficult little blessings!

In Numerology, every number is significant, yet there are three numbers to pay extra-special attention to: 11, 22 and 33 -- these are called "Master numbers." But what makes Master numbers so ... masterful?

These three Master numbers have profoundly powerful meanings, and when they appear in your chart, they can hint at difficulty. But Master numbers are often not well understood -- they can be just as much of a curse as they can be a blessing. They give you insight into obstacles by calling upon your patience and maturity -- and a lot of effort -- to peacefully integrate these elements into your personality. If you, personally, can master these Master numbers in your chart, however, they can be the most powerful, productive numbers of all.

For information about when the 11, 22 and 33 should be considered Master numbers, and when they should simply be reduced to their 2, 4 or 6 single-digit counterparts, read all about reducing Master numbers.

Exploring three of Numerology's most potent numbers

by Hans Decoz

One of the most fascinating and least understood aspects of Numerology has to do with the Master numbers. There are three Master numbers -- they are 11, 22 and 33. Some numerologists and even some Numerology books also consider 44, 55, 66 and so forth to be Master numbers. A while back I flipped through Numerology for Dummies in a local book store. The book would have been more accurately titled "Numerology by Dummies" as it claimed that any double-digit number consisting of two identical digits is a Master number. This shows a lack of understanding by the author whose knowledge of Numerology is superficial at best.

The fact that the numbers 11, 22, and 33 are double-digit numbers consisting of identical single digits is not the reason they are considered Master numbers. The 11 is a Master number because the 11 contains the digit 1 twice, the 22 is a Master number because it consists of the number 2 twice and 33 is made up of the number 3 twice making that also a Master number. It is the repetition of the numbers 1, 2, and 3 specifically that makes the 11, 22 and 33 Master numbers. Simply repeating any single-digit number twice does not make a Master number.

The 44, 55, 66 and so forth have what could be called a "focused and charged energy" compared to, for example, the numbers 45, 56, 67, but they are NOT Master numbers.

To further illuminate the issue of Master numbers, let me hereby offer an excerpt from my book, Numerology; Key To Your Inner Self, written by yours truly nearly 20 years ago:

There are 3 double-digit numbers that, while they are rooted in the single-digit numbers, require special emphasis and attention. These are 11, 22 and 33.

They are called Master numbers because they possess more potential than other numbers. They are highly charged, difficult to handle and require time, maturity and great effort to integrate into one's personality.

Master Number 11

The 11 is the most intuitive of all numbers. It represents illumination, a channel to the subconscious, insight without rational thought, and sensitivity, nervous energy, shyness and impracticality. The 11 is a dreamer. It has all the aspects of the 2, enhanced and charged with charisma, leadership and inspiration. It is a number with inborn duality, which creates dynamism and inner conflict with its mere presence. It's a number that, when not focused on some goal beyond itself, can be turned inward to create fears and phobias.

The 11 walks the edge between greatness and self-destruction. Its potential for growth, stability and personal power lies in its acceptance of intuitive understanding, and of spiritual truths. For the 11, such peace is not found so much in logic, but in faith. It is the psychic's number.

Master Number 11

The number 11 represents instinct, and is the most intuitive of all numbers. It is your connection to your subconscious, to gut feeling and knowledge without rationality. Because the 11 has all the qualities of the 2 (since 1 + 1 = 2), the negative points of the 11 -- anxiety, shyness, stressed energy -- are balanced out by the 2's qualities of charisma and inspiration. 11 is the dichotomy number, meaning it is both extremely conflicted and also a dynamic catalyst.

The danger of the 11 is that it needs to be focused on a very specific, concrete goal. If you have 11 in your chart and it isn't attached to a specific project, you will most likely experience anxiety and fear. It's extremely powerful and capable of great things, but can also be extremely self-sabotaging when not used correctly.

If you have the Master number 11 in your Numerology chart, tap into it and use it to create personal power and spiritual evolution. Do not deny your instincts, and let your inner, guiding voice push you toward growth and stability. This is a number of faith, and very much associated with psychics, clairvoyants and prophets.

Master Number 22

The 22 is the most powerful of all numbers. It is often called "the Master Builder." The 22 can turn the most ambitious of dreams into reality. It is potentially the most successful of all numbers. It has many of the inspirational insights of the 11, combined with the practicality and methodical nature of the 4. It is unlimited, yet disciplined. It sees the archetype, and brings it down to earth in some material form. It has big ideas, great plans, idealism, leadership and enormous self-confidence. If not practical, 22s can waste their potential.

Like the 11, the 22 can easily shrink from its own ambition, causing difficult interior pressures. Both the 11 and the 22 experience the pressure-cooker effect very strongly, particularly at an early age. It must work toward the realization of goals that are larger than personal ambition. The 22 serves the world in a practical way.

Master Number 22

The Master number 22 holds more power than any other number (earning it the nickname "the Master Builder"). It is a pragmatic number, a doer, capable of spinning wild dreams into concrete reality. Those who have 22 in their Numerology chart have great potential for success -- that's because it has all the intuition of the number 11, paired with a grounded and scientific approach associated with the number 4 (because 2 + 2 = 4). 22 is an ambitious but disciplined number.

The 22 represents lofty goals brought down to earth and made into something you can touch. It is a grandiose thinker with great confidence and leadership qualities. Unfortunately, not everyone with a 22 in their chart is practical -- this is symbolized by the brilliant person you might know who doesn't "live up to" their potential. This is the danger of both the 11 and 22 -- though both are capable of greatness, they can shy away from great opportunities or apply too much pressure to themselves.

If you have 22 in your chart, ease up and realize your limitless opportunities. Turn down the pressure-cooker and realize your shot at serving the world in an effective and practical way.

Master Number 33

The 33 is the most influential of all numbers. It is "the Master Teacher." The 33 combines the 11 and the 22 and brings their potential to another level. When expressed to the fullest, the 33 lacks all personal ambition, and instead focuses its considerable abilities toward the spiritual uplifting of mankind. What makes the 33 especially impressive is the high level of sincere devotion.

This is shown in its determination to seek understanding and wisdom before preaching to others. The 33 in full force is extremely rare.

The number 33 only matters when found among the core numbers of a person's Numerology chart: the Life Path number, Heart's Desire, Expression, Personality, Maturity, or as an Essence cycle or Pinnacle cycle. In all other cases the 33 should be reduced to a 6.

Master Number 33

The 33 is the mover and shaker of the Master numbers (earning it the nickname "Master Teacher"). With 11 and 22 combined in this Master number, intuition and dreams reach an entirely new orbit. A 33 used to its full potential means that there is no personal agenda, only a focus on humanitarian issues. Someone with 33 strongly featured in their chart has the ability to throw themselves into a project that goes far beyond mere practicality.

The number 33 represents full understanding before communication. With 33 represented in one's Numerology chart, that person is probably highly knowledgeable, but also fact-checks before preaching ideas or ideals.

This number in full efficiency is a sight to behold. But this is rare. Master number 33 is only significant if it's one of your Core numbers -- Life Path, Heart's Desire, Personal Expression, Personality or Maturity numbers. Otherwise, Numerology experts look at 33 as simply 6 (or 33/6, still weakening its power and downgrading it from a Master number).

Numerology experts pay special attention to Master numbers, and you should too. The best way to consider them? That 11, 22 and 33 create a triangle of enlightenment.

Together, the three Master numbers represent a triangle of enlightenment:

  • The number 11 represents the vision.
  • The number 22 combines vision with action
  • The number 33 offers guidance to the world.

Reducing Master Numbers!

Master numbers (11, 22 and 33) can be a curse and they can be a blessing when they appear in a Numerology chart -- but above all, they can be confusing! The rules for when to reduce Master numbers to single digits and when to leave them as double-digit numbers are not as easily defined as we would like them to be.

When a double-digit number or a date does not have the power to unleash Master number potential, we reduce it to a single digit.

For example, the month of November is an 11 and, in theory, might be considered a Master number. However, a month simply does not have Master number power. If it did, we would be going through some considerable turmoil every year come November.

Similarly, days  by themselves do not have Master number energy either. Consequently, we reduce the 11th and 22nd days of any month to 2 and 4, respectively, during almost all calculations.

An exception to that rule is when we calculate the Life Path and Birth Day numbers -- in part because they are core numbers in a chart, but also because they are more static, as opposed to the dynamic, changing nature of cycles. Keep in mind that the date of your birth is a dynamic number when viewed as just a date within the Universal cycle of calendar years, but it is a static number when seen as a single moment, a window in time through which you stepped into this life; the momentous event that is your birth.

When adding the digits found in a date to calculate cycles, such as Personal Year, Month and Day cycles, we always reduce the Master numbers, both within the date itself and in the process of adding them. Therefore, 9/11/2001 is first reduced to 9-2-3 (reduce 11 to 2, and 2001 to 3). As I mentioned, a date by itself does not have Master number potential.

If, however, we want to analyze a particular date, pulling it out of the context of a cycle, we still work with units that have been reduced to single digits, but now we recognize and acknowledge Master numbers during the process of calculation. Hence the fact that 9-2-3 (for September 11, 2001) has a First Pinnacle of 11 (from 9 + 2).

This is an apparent contradiction, but it does make some sense when you think about cycles as having progressive momentum, while a precise date is a specific point on that linear progression -- dynamic versus static.

To continue our little venture into confusionism, when adding digits to find a sum total in almost all calculations based on a name, we do not reduce Master numbers at any point. Even when we look for cycles that are derived from the name, such as Transit and Essence cycles, we do not reduce Master numbers. To make it even more mystifying, in the case of Essence cycles, we pay as much attention to the double-digit numbers as we do to their single-digit sums, even when those double-digit numbers are not Master numbers.

Finally, some letters, just like dates, have Master numbers. The K is the 11th number and the V is the 22nd number, two Master numbers that have been reduced to 2 and 4 respectively because Numerologists do not assign Master number powers to letters. They do, however, assign Master number power to additions that result in 11 or 22. Basically, the logic that decides on the fate of Master numbers when working with dates mirrors the logic used in the process of analyzing names.
